8/30/10 DGP: Parts of Speech. Discuss "Contents of a Dead Man's Pocket". RAFT writing. Get into groups & no hitchhiking! One of you is the writer, one of you is the reporter, & one of you is the editor. Create a story based on "Contents" where you find a dead body on the street. Is it an accident, a suicide, or a crime?
8/31/010 DGP: Identify the subject, verbs, and phrases. Do the Transitive vs. Intransitive worksheet. Get back in groups to continue writing your story based on "Contents" story. Be prepared to read orally on Wednesday.

9/9/10 DGP: Determine how many clauses & sentence type. Today is newspaper day! Using your yellow & pink highlighters, highlight everything in the article in yellow that you understand and everything in the article in pink that you don't understand. Every single word should be highlighted. Next using a dictionary, look up & define the words that you don't understand. Now write at least three questions that you have about the article & turn this in to me. For homework: write a sentence for each voc. word on P. 53 of the Holt Reader.

Newspaper Day! Find an article of your choice. Write three unfamiliar words from the article and use inference to predict what they mean. Write this down. Now look up the unfamiliar words in the dictionary and write the definition. Monitor your thinking. Were your powers of inference correct?
