1/8/09 DGP: Identify the Clauses and Sentence Type. Turn in your RAFT letter from Mark Antony. "The Language You Choose" worksheet on standard vs. nonstandard grammar. Go over Part 1 of Try Your Skill and complete the sheet over the weekend for Monday.
1/9/09 DGP: Capitalization and Punctuation. Vocabulary Test #7 today. Periods 6 and 7 go to the auditorium to see the play by the AR Repertory Theatre titled ONE NINTH. Periods 1 and 2 went over the business letter sample.
1/12/09 DGP: Parts of Speech for sentence #13. Turn in the nonstandard/standard English worksheet. New vocabulary list on P. 329 in the literature book. Go over Vocabulary Development on P. 327 on how to use context clues to determine word meaning. Read the R.M.S. Titanic for homework.
1/13/09 DGP: Locate the subject, verb, and all phrases. Take a short quiz over the Titanic article. (Periods 1, 2) Take the make up vocabulary quiz over Voc. #7.(Periods 6,7) Discuss the Titanic article by Baldwin. Do the worksheet "Commas in a Series" front side only for homework.

1/15/09 DGP: Capitalization and Punctuation. Continue studying the rules of commas. Do worksheet #4 for homework.
1/16/09 Vocabulary Test #8 P. 329! Finalize the chapter on commas covering all basic rules. Worksheet #6 to be completed for next Tuesday.

1/20/09 Begin Studying Poetry! TPCASTT METHOD. DGP: Parts of Speech. Read P. 482 Jimmy Santiago Baca's poem called "I Am Offering This Poem". Be sure to read the biography and the "Before You Read" secions.
1/21/09 DGP #14: Find the subject, determine if the verbs are transitive or intransitive, and identify all phrases. Do a TPCASTT of the Baca poem and read P. 484-485 e.e. cummings poem called "since feeling is first". Write a NAME poem using a minimum of five letters. Every letter of your name should be represented by a word or a line of poetry.
1/22/09 DGP #14: Determine how many clauses there are and what type of sentence it is. Do a TPCASTT of the e.e. cummings poem from yesterday. Use the white piece of paper I've given you to be creative with designing your name poem. Turn it in if you're finished or by the first of the period tomorrow.
1/23/09 DGP#14: Capitalization and Punctuation. TPCASTT of the Emily Dickinson poem called "Heart! We will forget him!" Write an ACROSTIC poem for Monday.

1/30/09 DGP #15 Capitalization and Punctuation of sentence. Poetry Terms Test #1. View video of Robert Frost and his poetry. 6th and 7th periods have a worksheet that goes along with the video. Write in your composition notebook on the topic of my "Favorite Hamburger" after having read the sheet on the origin of the hamburger.
2/2/09 DGP #16: determine the parts of speech. There are 4 nouns and 3 verbals. Read & do a TPCASTT of the poem "Miss Rosie" on P. 521-525. Read the "Meet the Writer" and "The Poet in You" on P. 525. "It's Sensational" worksheet and read P. 518-520 for homework. Hand out Poetry Terms two list for students to study for Friday.

Read the poem "Sea Fever" on P. 507, read Meet the Writer, and Background Info.
2/5/09 DGP#16: Capitalization and Punctuation. Do a TPCASTT of "Sea Fever". Get into groups and compose a group poem based on some type of fever. I read several examples in class. This will be for a group grade.
2/6/09 Poetry Terms II quiz! After the quiz, work in groups to compose a "fever poem" and be prepared to present it before the class. Again, this is for a group grade. Happy Friday!

We watched the filmstrip on "Sound Effects in Poetry" and looked at sound devices in poetry. We watch a brief biography DVD on Edga Allan Poe and I passed out a copy of "The Raven" to each student. Reminder that your Extended Metaphor poems are due on Tuesday!

Read and analyze the Shakespearean sonnet "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day?". Do a TPCASTT of this poem. Watch part of a filmstrip on meter and rhythym in poetry. Read about Persuasive Essays P. 294-300 for Wednesday.
2/11/09 DGP #17: Identify the number of clauses and the sentence type. For homework read P. 294-300 on Persuasive Essays if you didn't already read this! Read the poem "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe and discuss its use of end rhyme and internal rhyme as well as other sound devices. Pass back Poetry Terms II quiz.
2/12/09 No DGP due to scheduling today! Go to the auditorium for scheduling for next year. Pick up a Course Catalog and a schedule from the counselors. Listen to information provided about graduation, types of diplomas, etc. Study for Poetry Terms III Quiz on Friday!
2/13/09 DGP of capitalization and punctuation on Sentence #17. Turn in your DGP for the week. Poetry Terms III Quiz on the Scan Tron sheet. Review "A Writer's Framework" on P. 297 of the textbook. Write down three isssues and three opinion statements. Choose the one with the strongest support. Do a brainstorm as a prewriting technique and begin to write a rough draft Persuasive Essay. 2/17/09 DGP #18: Identify Parts of Speech. Persuasive Essay prewriting sheet and assignment sheet were given out in class. Write an Opinion Statement or Thesis Statement of your topic for the essay(with Mrs. Cowne's approval). Write your rough draft in class on the topic of the Persuasive Essay. Scheduling with counselors takes place during your English class today! You must have your schedule signed by a parent.
2/18/09 DGP #18: Locate and label the subjects, verbs, and any phrases. Make up quiz for Period 1 over Poetry Terms III Quiz from last Friday! We talked about the Prewriting sheet and the assignment sheet for the Persuasive Essay. I explained in detail how to write an essay & where to place your strongest points. Prewriting sheet is due tomorrow.
2/19/09 DGP #18: Identify the clauses and sentence type. Chunk Test Persuasive Essay is to be written in class with a 45 minute timeline. Complete your rough draft of your Persuasive Essay for homework.

2/23/09 DGP #19: Identify and label the parts of speech. Study the STOP method for writing a persuasive essay. REVISION ="to see again" . Revise and edit your persuasive essay using a partner in class.

3/4/09 DGP #20 Identify the clauses and the sentence type. Several handouts. Learn how to do notecards and the purpose of notecards. I'm handing out the Parent Letter about the research project. This letter needs to be signed ASAP, but it is due Monday, March 9th. Students need to create between 10-15 interview questions to ask your parents about the day you were born.
3/5/09 DGP #20 Capitalization and Punctuation. I'm taking up the DGP sentences this week for a grade.
Turn in your signed parent letter today! We're learning about source cards and how to keep track of the information that you research. Interview questions are due. You only need to bring your research folder and note cards to class. Leave your literature book in your locker!

3/9/09 We're in the library today, Tues., and Wed. You need to concentrate on the three items below "interviews" on the Headings of Note Cards sheet: 5 famous people, 5 sporting events, 5 historical events that occurred on your birthday. Remember of these 5 items that you are to write all 5 on a note card then select one to do an in-depth article. We are only in the library for three days so make use of your time!
3/10/09 We're in the library to continue research. Remember that at least one book is required for your research data. Make sure you are doing source cards as well as note cards on every item that you decide to use in your report.
3/11/09 We're in the library for the last time today. You need to have completed all three items on the 1st page of your folder: 5 famous people, 5 sporting events, 5 historical events.
3/12/09 Back in the classroom. We'll be talking about the Connection Article. Take notes and ask questions!

3/16/09 No DGP this week as we are actively finalizing our research project! Explain the process of doing a formal outline. We did a practice outline worksheet in class. Your final formal outline is due Wednesday of this week. For homework continue to do research and work on your connection article.
3/17/09 Happy St. Patrick's Day!!! Did you "Beware of the Ides of March" on March 15th? That was a bonus question which one student answered correctly in each class for 5 bonus points!
Today I reviewed how to write a formal outline and I taught Parenthetical Documentation ( a fancy way of saying write it down in parenthesis). There were four handouts that were given. I reminded students that their formal outlines are due tomorrow on Wednesday.
3/18/09 Formal Outlines are Due! Students had time to ask questions about the research project and to write their rough draft of their Connection Article in class. If you did not write your rough draft in class, YOU ARE BEHIND!
3/19/09 Go to room 259 to the Writing Center to receive instruction on setting up and formatting the brochure in Microsoft Publisher. Save your work to the hard drive!
3/20/09 Room #259 of the Writing Center. Continue to set up page #2 and begin typing in your info. into the brochure. Remember to save the information! Continue to do research today & through Spring Break if you have not completed your research!
